Careers and Diversity in research software engineering
Organiser(s):
Nicholas Walton (IoA, Cambridge), George Beckett (Edinburgh), Jon Hays (Queen Mary London), Anna Scaife (Manchester), John Veitch (Glasgow), Mark Wilkinson (Leicester)
Session type:
Specialist Lunch
Description:
The session will discuss the importance of enhancing research software engineers career paths and diversity in keeping the UK at the forefront of data exploitation. This session will provide space for a discussion on how major development projects in astronomy are increasingly recognising the importance of both career paths for software engineers, and enhancing diversity in the software engineering workforce to reflect society more generally. The session will also consider relevant recommendations recently released in the Astronet Science Vision and Infrastructure Roadmap for European "Astronomy Computing - big data, high performance computing, data infrastructure” and "Societal aspects – education, public engagement climate action, equality, diversity and inclusion” reports. Anita Banerji from the University of Manchester will introduce steps being taken to improve diversity in s/w engineering across UKRI (and in particular the physical science domain) and note how the UK REF and Astronet roadmap play a role in increasing focus on the importance of valuing diversity.
