[CSL-DR1] Lunch Session: Getting your work into the news: how to communicate through the media

Date
07.07.2023 13:15 - 14:15
Location
CSL - Dual room 1.26-1.27

Description

Getting your work into the news: how to communicate through the media

Organiser(s):

Jake Gilmore (STFC UKRI), Robert Massey (RAS), Gurjeet Kahlon (RAS)

Session type:

Specialist Lunch

Description:

This lunch session will help you to think about how to communicate the value of your astronomy research through the news media - broadcast, print and online - and in so doing reach a wide audience.

The speakers and organisers, press managers from RAS and STFC, and a leading science journalist from a mainstream news organisation, have many years of experience of raising awareness of complex astronomy stories through the UK and global news media, including JWST, Rosetta and Gaia, and the detection of biomarkers on Venus.

The workshop will include:
- What you need to do to get your work on air, online and in print
- What journalists want - and what they don't
- Working with your press office
- Handling hype and misconceptions

We hope this session will give you the skills and tools to aid you in promoting your work to a mass audience. Astronomy is set to have another fantastic decade of discovery, and it's time to share that with the world at large!

We will ensure that our session is accessible to all attendees, including remote participants, and that the talks and discussions involve a balanced and diverse range of speakers.
